Dumb Ways to Build Beginner Guide

Everything a new player needs for the first session, written only from official mechanics.

Last verified: 2026-09-13 · build 1.2.70 · Mechanics below come from the official store description and launch announcement.

Your first session

  1. Choose your mode — Solo Play, or online co-op with up to three friends via Room Code.
  2. Customize your Bean — the game's characters are “Beans”; cosmetics unlock as you play (bean-sona).
  3. Pick a Crisis Job — deadly construction jobs such as Hotel Hapless, Drain Strain and Crane Climb.
  4. Build your path — grab, rotate and throw loose materials; nail bridges, ramps and structures together.
  5. Escape or fail — there are many ways to die in Dumbville; restarting is part of the loop.

Building basics

  • Anything not bolted down is a material — the official description says to use makeshift building materials creatively.
  • The nail gun is your staple-for-structures tool: staple together sketchy bridges, ramps and platforms.
  • The tool belt is physics-based — a sledgehammer can move steel beams… or launch a teammate.

Solo vs. co-op

Solo Play exists so one player can face the chaos alone. Online co-op supports 1–4 players and is cross-platform (Steam + PS5 + Xbox Series X|S) — details on the crossplay page. There is no announced split-screen mode.

Hazards and death

Hazards, environmental dangers and deaths are core to the game — “safety violations are likely, survival is optional.” The studio's marketing counts deaths as comedy (“so many Dumb Ways to Die”), and a full death/recovery list is not part of any official material we treat as verified, so specific revive rules are not stated here yet.

Where to go next

After your first Jobs, the Master Builder mode unlocks at higher difficulty, and achievements (25 total) track your progression. The controls guide covers keyboard and controller input.
